What are the academic backgrounds of the participants in your classroom? 
Molecular biology, immunology, bioinformatics, human genetics, medicine, mycobacteriology and pathology

What are the main research interests of your institution? Our main research interest is based on biomedical research with the focus on Tuberculosis (TB), both from the host and the pathogen. Looking at specific research topics such as drug resistant TB, TB biomarkers and data rich “mycobactomics” (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics).

Tell us something interesting about your institution: We are from Stellenbosch University, but our faculty (Medicine and Health Sciences) is located at Tygerberg Campus in Cape Town, which is approximately 30km from the town of Stellenbosch.

Tell us something interesting about your city or country? Our country is at the most Southern tip of the continent. The famous Two Oceans Marathon is held in Cape Town every year, named after the supposed meeting point of the Pacific and Indian Oceans.  The City is also located at the foot of Table Mountain, which has been is named one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. Additionally, we also have the well known Groote Schuur Hospital, where the world’s first human-to-human heart transplant was performed in 1967 by Christiaan Barnard (South African cardiac surgeon).
